Your union contract determines your wages, benefits, retirement and your rights on the job. Your contract is your work life. Learn more about your contract and the commercial contract campaign below.
About Your Contract
Your contract – the legal agreement that includes all the rules around your job such as wage rates, time off, benefits and working conditions – expires this year.
A group of elected union members and officers sit down across the table with the boss and hash out every aspect of your union job in a series of negotiations. As always, the bosses want you to do more for less; but we want to win higher wages, protect your benefits and strengthen your rights on the job.

Your contract is negotiated between a bargaining committee elected by you and your co-workers and your employer, who is often represented by an association of employers.
The bargaining committee—along with lawyers and representatives from the union—will meet numerous times with your employer over the course of weeks or even months to come to an agreement on a fair contract.
The contract, also known as a tentative agreement, is then put to a vote where you and your co-workers decide on ratifying the contract. Once it is ratified by the membership, the contract is signed by the employers and the union–and then becomes official.
About the Campaign
Up and down the East Coast, over 75,000 32BJ SEIU office cleaners who work hard to keep downtown and suburban office buildings clean and ready for business each day, are coming together this year to win strong contracts that will benefit communities in every zip code.
Janitors are fighting for communities where no one is left behind and everyone shares in the prosperity they help create. We are those whose unseen work is at the heart of our cities. We do not stand alone. More than 134,000 SEIU janitors across the country are coming together across different backgrounds to rewrite the rules in favor of all working families, no exceptions.
You know you and your co-workers are stronger when you stick together on the job. As a union, we are all stronger when we all stick together. It is through a strong organization like 32BJ that you have a good wage and benefits such as health care, paid time off and other free services – your union advantage.
Our power to secure higher wages, better health care and other free services depends on how committed the bosses think we are. If we do not stand together and fight for a strong contract, we will lose important protections and it will be easier for employers to cut our jobs, our wages and our benefits.
Over the next year, we will be working with you to make sure your union is strong, united and ready to fight for a strong contract.
Your field rep or shop steward or other 32BJ member leader will be connecting with you and your co-workers to get involved. Over the next few months, you will have an opportunity to take action for your contract by attending rallies, demonstrations, bargaining sessions, participating in photo actions, contributing to our social justice fund, the American Dream Fund and possibly going on strike.
